0':>
':'\l
M
C\1

CHAPTER IV

PLAN FORMULATION

Milk Creek Canal

The Milk Creek Canal would be 12 miles long with an initial capacity
of 60 second-feet. There would be about 15 miles of laterals from the
canal, the largest of which would be the 12-mile-long Iles Lateral with
an initial capacity of 20 second-feet.

Morapos Feeder Canal

The Morapos Feeder Canal would be about 7.5 miles long and have a
capacity of 70 second-feet.

Avery Pumping Plant

The Avery Pumping Plant would lift 160 second-feet of water from
Lake Avery to the White River Feeder Conduit. The total design head
is 255 feet. The length of the pipeline would be 1.4 miles.

White River Feeder Pumping Plant

.

The White River Feeder Pumping Plant, consisting of 9 pumping units,
would lift 300 second-feet of wate~ through a total design head of 275
feet.

Recreational Facilities

Moderate recreational facilities would be constructed at Thornburgh
Reservoir and the enlarged Lake Avery to the degree usually provided.
The facilities would include campg~ounds, picnic areas, drinking water
systems, toilets, boat ramps, and ~oadways. Construction of a small
building to provide public information would mark the sites of historic
Indian battles near Meeker and at Thornburgh Reservoir, as provided in
each of the other plans.

,

Fish and Wildlife Features

Through an exchange agreement with the owner, Axial Reservoir on
Good Spring Creek (tributary to Milk Creek) would be stabilized &. i
managed for fishing and recreation. The present irrigation function
of Axial Reservoir would be transferred to Thornburgh Reservoir. Rights
for public use would be acquired, and minimum facilities for fishermen
would be constructed.

To mitigate wildlife losses that may be associated with project
ope~ation and to enhance future wildlife conditions, land in the Oak
Ridge area would be acquired for long-term management as a big-game area.
It is anticipated that the Colorado Division of \~ildlife would admi~ist~r
both this area and Axial Reservoir.

39
