Most of the irrigated farm- <br />Imlds are devoted to the production of livestock feeds which are used in <br />conjunction with nearby private and public rangelands. Some potatoes and <br />other row crops are produced on the irrigated project lands. Most of the <br />livestock and other farm produce are shipped outside the a.rea for proc- <br />essing. <br /> <br />Mining is important to the economy of the region but no major mining <br />activities are ill operation within the project area itself. Recreational <br />attractions are important in the area. These include health and recrea- <br />tional resorts at Glenwood Springs and Aspen and nearby lakes, streams, <br />and spectacular mountains. <br /> <br />Irrigation development <br /> <br />Successful farming operations in the area have always been dependent <br />upon irrigation. The first appropriations of natural streamflows for <br />irrigation were made in 1882, immediately following settlement of the area <br />in 1881 after the removal of the Ute Indian tribe.
