Approximately 900 acres
would be inundated during this maximum design flood, but would be drained
out as flood flows receded. Compacted earth lining would be placed to
handle 3,000 cfs flows. This would contain Dolores River flows 95 percent
of the time.

The flood channel would be located high enough on the side hill to eliminate

the need for riprapping the entire length of the east side of the dike

s~parating the flood channel and Paradox Evaporation Pond. This would also

permit a larger pond volume and evaporation surface area. The Paradox

Evaporation Pond would contain 58,200 acre-feet of storage and 2,630 acres

of surface area at a maximum water surface elevation of 4,970.

The costs of this plan are presented on the summary table of comparative

alterrl1itives . This-plan '-has lower annual operation,mairttenance and. replace-

ment costs than the previous plan since no electrical power is required.

Visible evidence of this plan would be the flood channel and dike and the

Paradox Evaporation Pond. About 900 acres of crop land and 2,300 acres of

pasture land would be eliminated by the Paradox Evaporation Pond, and an

additional 900 acres of agricultural land would be susceptible to flooding

during the maximum design flood occurrence.

Construction materials available at the site may be remnants o~ the

original gypsum cap and unsuitable for construction use. Long haul distance

may be involved which have not been considered in costing the dikes.

()OfS03

21
