<br />'. <br /> <br />~ <br />w;. <br /> <br />The pumping plants required for this plan would consume approximately <br />18.8 million kilowatt hours of electrical energy each year and would have <br />a power demand of about 2,230 kilowatts. <br /> <br />The proposed Radium Evaporation Pond would be located on the West Fork <br />of Dry Creek about eight miles southwest of Naturita, Colorado. The <br />area consists of a shallow, elongated basin lying between the up-tilted <br />cliff rims of Big Gypsum and Paradox Valleys. The pond area has a <br />saline shale floor sparsely vegetated with sagebrush, greasewood and grasses. <br />The total capacity of Radium Reservoir would be 70,000 acre-feet and <br />have a water surface area of 3,375 acres. Approximately 66,000 acre-feet <br />with a water surface area of 3,275 acres would be reserved for discharged <br />brine and deposited salts, while the remaining capacity would be designed <br />to hold flood inflow. . This would provide a sufficient capacity to hold <br />salt deposits accumulated over a 100-year period. <br /> <br />An emergency spillway, consisting of a concrete overflow section, would <br />be installed at the south end of the dike on the east side of the pond. <br />Should this facility ever be needed, the flows routed through it would <br />be of relatively good quality, since fresh water and brine would stratify <br />in the pond: The formation rocks underlying the area are impervious, <br />and there shol,ld be no seepage from the pond to contaminate the ground- <br />water basin. <br /> <br />This ylan would,use a significant amount of electrical power and incur <br /> <br />high annual operation, maintenance and replacement costs. The visible <br /> <br />evidence of ~he project would be the well field, Hydrogen Sulfide scrubber <br /> <br />plant ~~ eight relift pumping plants, and the Radium Dam, Dike and <br /> <br />Reservoir. The project's expected life would be over 100 years. Special <br /> <br />hardware for handling the brine flow would pose many technical problems for <br /> <br />the design engineers. <br /> <br />000597 <br /> <br />1/ Hydrogen sulfide is a toxic gas contained in the brine which would be <br />removed by the scrubber plant. <br /> <br />15 <br />
