[)~~5~5

A moderate variety of different landscapes is found in this area.
Slopes are steep but not generally as precipitous as in Variety
Class A. There is a less distinctive suite of glacial landforms,
mostly consisting of U shaped valleys and subdued morainal features.
Interesting landscape elements include rock outcrops, cliffs, talus
slopes, avalanche chutes, and small cirques. Water forms consist of
perennial and intermittent streams, very small ponds, and wet meadows.
A moderate variety of vegetation types is present. Predominant
coniferous forest or brush cover is combined with large natural
openings and deciduous vegetation (aspen) in patterns that offer
seasonal color contrast and some visual relief.

3, Variety Class ~

The slope southeast of Schuylkill Mountain, 11% of Study Area, i,;
considered Variety Class C.

This area consists essentially of one landscape. It is a broad,
steep, smooth slope that is weakly dissected by intermittent streams.
There are extensive areas of similar vegetation with little variation
in pattern, form, color, or texture. The landscape is lacking in
visual interest when compared to other landscapes in the study Area.

M. LAND STATUS
----

The Study Area is 5,500 acres of reserved public domain within the
Gunnison National Forest, exc~pt for about 50 acres of patented mining
claims. Table 111-13 shows the name, location, acreage, patent date
and ownership of the six patented mining claims. The locations mapped
on Figure 111-14 are taken from the Bureau of 1,and ~<lanagement Master
Title Plat for T13S R87W 6th PM as updated to ~"une 12, 1978, The
ground location is uncertail All public land within the Study Area
is open to mineral entry ani leasing.

unpatented mining claims co' er 3105 acres or 56~ of the Study Area
(:roughly 200 claims). Data In unpatented claiw, was taken from the
December 20, 1980 update of the Bureau of Land tanagement's claim
recordation data. In addit on to the above AMA:, Inc., in 1981 staked
49 more claims within the S1 udy Area. These re:ords indicate that
tllere are two major mining (laimants within Oh- ,e-Joyful; u.S. Energy
Corporation, and AMAX Corpo' ation. (including sJbsidiaries of these
companies). Claim blocks o/erlap over an exten~ive area.

AMAX, Inc. has selected 14 acres in the SE corn ~r of the study area in
a proposed land exchange for a mine site for th) Mount Enunons project.
The land is not now classified for disposal.

portions o.r four federal oi 1 and gas leases own ~d by Brooks Explora-
tion Incori, orated cover 4315 acreS or 3D'>;; of t.hl' study area.
