Administration) between 1963 and 1970. Joint investi9ations of the salinity
problem and possible control measures were conducted in 1968-1969 by the
FWPCA and the Bureau of Reclamation. The results of these studies were
published in 1971 by the Environmental Protection Agency under the title of
Mineral Quality Problems in the Colorado River Basin.

Since 1970, Reclamation has conducted an ISSP (Intensive Salinity Surveil-
lance Program) in the Colorado River between Parker and Imperial Dams.
The program involves regular sampling of water quality at major diversions,
agricultural drains, and the river itself between Parker and Imperial
Dams. The average annual net salt discharge to the river, based upon these
data, is 167,000 tons.

Bookman-Edmonston Engineering, Inc., under contract with Reclamation,
studied and reported on "Reduct ion of Salt Loading to the Colorado River from
the Palo Verde Irrigation District," in August 1976. Based on this report
and subsequent Reclamation studies, a status report was published in March
1980.

List of Participants

Agencies participating in the study include the SCS (Soil Conservation
Service), U.S. Geological Survey, Bookman-Edmonston Engineering, the PVID,
the Salinity Laboratory at Riverside, California, and the Colorado River
Board of California.

2

0":;2928
