FUTURE ACTIVITIES

Monitoring of the canal and lateral system will continue. The salinity
contributions from the District will be monitored throughout continued
planning. An evaluation of the flushing or accelerated leaching test will be
made to verify its effectiveness.

Continued salt and water budget work will determine what quantity of water
can actually be conserved by reducing phreatophyte and other consumptive
uses.

If lateral lining in the Palo Verde subarea can be justified under the
salinity reduction objective, improving other canals and laterals in the
District would provide some salinity reduction benefits. If the District
were able to improve the canals and laterals in the remainder of the
District, credit against repayment might be possible in the Rannells and
other subareas to the extent that salinity reduction can be justified.

When studies are completed, the Regional Director's proposed report and
draft environmental statement would be reviewed by other agencies.
Following this review, the report and the environmental statement could be
completed and the Secretary of the Interior could request authorization
for construction.

If, based on the Secretary's report, Congress authorizes the unit, advance
planning studies will be conducted. Costs and designs for a recommended
plan would be refined and other options would be considered if new studies
prove other alternatives more cost effective,

During advance planning, operation, maintenance, and replacement contracts
would be negotiated and signed with the PVID to assure that the new
facilities would be operated and maintained efficiently.

OJ294J

17
