<br />INTRODUGrION <br /> <br />The Dolores "ater Conservancy District recognized the need for providing <br />technical assistance to farm operators who will receive irrigation water from the <br />Bureau of Reclamation's Dolores Project. Based on this, they requested the Soil <br />Conservation Service to conduct a study on the Dolores Irrigation Project Lands. <br /> <br />Soil Conservation Service participation in the study which was carried out <br />under the activity of Section 6, Watershed Protection and Flood Prevention Act, <br />PL83-566 as amended. Other participating agencies and support include the Bureau <br />of Reclamation, the Extension Service, Dolores Soil Conservation District and <br />Dove Creek Soil Conservation District. <br /> <br />As a result of the high degree of local interest and support, SCS designated <br />a target area plarming team fran the staff assigned to the Cortez Field Office to <br />wrk in the study area. The River Basin Plaming Staff provided support <br />activities to the plarming effort. <br /> <br />The study focused on conversion of dry cropland to irrigated cropland and <br />addressing the issues of increased erosion, sedimentation, salinity, adequate <br />farm planning, proper irrigation design, as well as the economics of conservation <br />cropping systans and farming. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />-2- <br />
