r--
r--
["-

mE SAVERY-POTHOOK RECLAMATION PROJECT: ANALYSIS OF ECONOMIC EFFEcrS
ON EXISTING RANCHES AND NEW FA~I UNITS

1'1. G. KearI'!.!

A study of the Savery-Pothook reclamation area was initiated at the request

of the "Wyoming Reclamation Projects Survey Team" headed by Oscar K. Barnes of

the University of Wyoming. The purpose was to make an independent evaluation of

the proposed project. An important aspect was the economic effect of the project

on ranch units existing in the area, under various assumptions. The size of new

farm units and the types of enterprises which mi~ht be feasible on new farm units

were also investigated.

I d . 2/
ntro uctlon-

The Savery-Pothook Reclamation Project, as proposed, is a participatin~

project of the Colorado River Storage Project. It is located on the Little Snake

River, which flows in a westerly direction out of the fledicine Bow ~Iountains and

through undulating foothill areas near the boundary between l~yoming and Colorado,

and southwesterly to its confluence with the Yampa and thence to the Green and

the Colorado Rivers. Baggs, Wyoming, the largest town in the reclamation area,

is located about 76 highway miles southltest of Rawlins, [{yoming, and about 40

miles north of Craig, Colorado. The entire project is in two separate areas--one

in the vicinity of Baggs and upstream and a second in the Two-Bar, Lily Park, and

Deer Lodge areas located from about 38 to 55 air miles downstream from Baggs,

near the confluence with the Yampa River (Fi~ure 1).

l! Assistant Professor of Arricultural Economics. Douglas E. Agee, Extension
Economist, assisted in collecting and summarizing data. His other work
assignments prevented him from participating in preparation of budgets and
drafting this report.
~ Principal source of the general information and facts and data included in this
introduction have been: Savery-Pothook Project, Colorado-Wyoming, House
Document No. 461, 87 Congress, 2nd Session (U.S. Government Printing Office,
Washington, D. C.: 1962).
