00
00
1'-

- 12 -

A self-contained unit of 160 acres of Class I land, or its equivalent, is not

likely to be an economical unit in the Snvery~Pothook area. It will probably be more

economical to have units lar,P'e enoup,h in the beginnin(T, rather than have "starvation

consolidations" at a later date. Therefore, in further analysis of this problem,

size limits have been relaxed and various sizes of operation have been considered.

Case Study - Existing Ranches

Four of the individual ranches on which complete ranch enumerations were taken

were examined in greater detail. In presenting data relating to these four ranches,

certain adjustments have been made in order to eliminate Some of the peculiarities

and irregularities which occur as year-to-year variations. It is felt that these

adjustments will not materially affect the results of the analysis. But the adjust-

ments will simplify the explanation and comparisons between ranches, and will simpli-
fy consideration of the effects of changes resulting if the Savery-Pothook Reclama-

tion Project should be constructed.

An attempt was made to evaluate the effect of the project on the four case-

study ranches. In makin!, this evaluation, the actual 1962 situation was adjusted to

a normalized situation. In adjustin,P' to a normalized situation, present resources

were used, but productivity and efficiency as indicated by yields, calf crop, cattle

weights, and labor requirements were set at average levels, and long-term average

or projected prices were used. The 'normalized situation without the project was

compared with two situations if the project Nere constructed. The first situation

would provide supplemental water to the present land resources only. The second

situation considered would allow for supplemental water on the present deeded and

leased land resources. Acquisition of sufficient irrigated land to bring the ranch-

irrigated acreage up to 400 acres of deeded land is also allowed in this second

situation, with a possibility of leasing additional irrigated land also.

I

I
