SAMPLING TECHNIQUES - What you may see on the river:
A variety ofnon-Jethal methods will be used to collect fish. These will include: 1)
trammel or wall nets (75' x 6') fished along the eddy lines and in pools, attached to
the shore and stretched down current, recognized by a float attached to the
downstream end; 2) hOOD nets (large conical traps) fished along the shoreline with
the majority if not the entire net submerged, also recognized by a downstream
marker float; 3) seines (fine meshed nets strung between two poles) pulled
through backwaters and pools by hand, motorized sport boat or raft; 4) two
electrofishinl! boats (a red Achilles sport boat and a 16' Avon PRO).
Electrofishing consists of creating a localized field of DC electricity in the river
via an onboard generator. The electrical field, which extends about 5 yds from the
boat, stuns fish which can then be dip netted by crew members standing on an
elevated platform at the front of the boat.

NOTE: Due to the activity patterns of some fish, some of the work will occur
after dark, requiring crews to use high powered hand held lights to navigate and
work the nets. The electro fishing boat is loud and is equipped with two flood
lights attached near the netting platform. We will make every effort practical to
reduce impacting the public's river experience.

Our crews will be more than willing to answer any questions the public may have
while on the river or at the boat ramps.

) DISPOSITION OF FISH:

All fish collected other than channel catfish, smallmouth bass, green sunfish, and
black crappie will be released alive. In the control sections, these fish will be
released alive, whereas those in the removal sections of the river will be killed.
Dead fish will be dispose of by puncturing their swim bladders (an air-filled sack
in the fish), causing them to sink to the river bottom. Prior to disposal, valuable
information will be obtained from dead fish regarding their food habits.

For more information contact:
Utah Division of Wildlife Resources
Northeastern Regional Office
Ron Stewart, Information and Education Manager
(80 I) 789-8343

Utah Division of Wildlife Resources
Northeastern Regional Office
Native Fisheries Section
(801) 538-7394

5 DRAFT
