set for two hours, twice each week (n=51), after light traps had been collected.
Drift net samples were preserved in alcohol for later examination and counting in
Vernal. Larval fish were sent to LFL for identification. Tabulated results for
larval light trap and drift net catch are presented in the Appendix.

Presence of and habitat use by young-of-the-year endangered fish were sampled
using 4 m x 1 m seine nets of 3 mm mesh. All backwater, suitable slack-water
and low velocity habitats within two, two-mile (RM 29-27; RM 13.8-11.8) and
one three-mile (RM 3.0-0.0) river reach were seined. Assorted physical
measurements of seined habitats were also collected. Three sampling trips were
conducted (12 August - 14 August; 26 August - 28 August; 9 September - II
September) resulting in collections from 163 sites. Additional trips were canceled
due to high flows (above 100 cfs) from mid September through October. All fish
captured were identified and counted in the field or preserved and examined in
Vernal. Fourteen of eighteen species captured were introduced species. None of
the four remaining species were endangered species (the chubs captured had fro
ray counts matching the typical roundtail morph). There was some stratification
of species within the river. Redside shiners were caught almost exclusively above
the confluence with the Uinta River, while sand shiners were caught almost
exclusively below that point. Bluegill (all adults) were captured below the Uinta
River and black crappie were caught only in the vicinity of the confluence with
the Green River. The four adult catfish captured were all in an eddy at RM 13.4.
Results of sampling are presented in the Appendix.

No charmel morphology transects were established in 1997. This activity is
scheduled for FY98. Discussions of applicable habitat measurement/evaluation
for this study are under discussion between the principal investigators.

The original study design called for young-of-the-year sampling in four, three-
mile reaches; one near Myton and three between the Uinta River and the
confluence with the Green River. Difficulty in sampling this river and a paucity
of access points induced researchers to decrease this to the two, two-mile and one,
three-mile sampling reaches described above.

VII. Recommendations:

Recommendations for changes to this study are incorporated armually via the
Duchesne River Technical Team discussion. FY98 SOW should reflect
recommended changes from UDWR.

VIII. Project Status: on track and ongoing

IX. FY 97 Budget
A. Funds Provided: $45K
B. Funds Expended: $45K
C. Difference: 0

2
