time.

Habitat transects were identified in early May. Adult fish
sampling began 21 May (pre-peak flow) and ended 3 October
(base flow); early life sampling began 5 June and ended 11
September. Table 1 gives sample types, gear, date, river
reach and descriptions. One shortcoming was that we were
unable to sample the Uinta River, a tributary of the
Duchesne River, because high water and limited access made
sampling a safety concern in the spring. Better local
knowledge will allow us to complete this task in FY98.

Radio transmitters were implanted in five Colorado squawfish
(rm 13, 13, 15, 26, 33) and one razorback sucker (rm 0.1)
between 4 June and 19 June. These fish were followed by
aerial flights and ground monitoring approximately weekly
from 19 June through 30 September. Two Colorado squawfish
that remained in the in the Duchesne River during summer
were tracked over 24-hours for habitat use data.

Task 2. Determine changes in habitat conditions under
various test flow scenarios. UDWR will contact Jack Schmidt
at Utah State University to assist with this task. The
geomorphic model developed by Jack for the Duchesne River
will be evaluated/modified during year one to facilitate
completion of this task in out years.

This task was delayed so that the principle investigators
can select the most appropriate method for quantifying
habitat availability at differing flows.

Task 3. Use data colelcted in Tasks 1 and 2 to develop
additonal hypotheses for testing as needed.

This is an ongoing task.

Task 4. Outline and define the Scope of Work for FY-98.

The FY98 draft scope of work was sent out for review in
December 1997.

VII. Recommendations:

1. Add winter sampling to determine if endangered fish use
the Duchesne River year-round.

2. In FY98 select an appropriate method for quantifying
endangered fish habitat at differing flows and complete
field work and modeling in out-years FY99, FYOO and FY01.

VIII.Project Status:

The project is on track except for developing the geomorphic
model.

2
