.~. .. \
'\
. ~

00
~
an
~

,,,..
L f~'~?J

UC-700
2/28/73

Preliminary Summary Sheets
Upper Gunnison Project, Colorado

I,ocation

West-central Colorado, along the Gunnison River and its tributaries above
Blue Mesa Reservoir.

Authorization

Feasibility investigations were authorized by Public Lm' 485 as amended
by Public Law 90-537 dated September 30, 1968.

Current Status

Feasibility investigations were initiated in FY 1965.

Investigations have been made on numerous plans for providing water for
irrigation, municipal and domestic, and recreation and fish purposes.
The project area was divided into three physically independent units
and the most feasible plan for each unit determined. A field draft of
the concluding report and appendices has been prepared. The concluding
report will summarize the findings of the investigations. It appears
that the plans studied are economically marginal.

Total cost of the investigations to June 30, 1972, including appraisal
(reconnaissance) and feasibility amount to $842,818.

Plan of Development

Data on three plans studied are given hereafter.

The three units are the Ohio Creek, East River, and Tomichi Creek Units.
Each unit would provide water for irrigation. In addition the Ohio
Creek and East River Units would provide municipal and domestic water.
The East River and Tomichi Units would provide water for recreation and
fish enhancement.

Project water for the Ohio Creek Unit would be provided through reopera-
tion of the existing Taylor Park Reservoir and from water exchanges on
Ohio Creek, and some use of project return flows. The exchange water
would be replaced by storage releases from Taylor Park Reservoir. The
irrigation supplies would be distributed by the Paragon Canal and exist-
ing ditches. Municipal and domestic water would be distributed by the
initial closed reaches of the Paragon Canal and the Gunnison M&D Pipeline.

Water for the East River Unit would be provided by stbrage of surplus
flows of Cement Creek in Cement Creek Reservoir. The reservoir would
provide new opportunities for lake fishing and recreation, and the more
stable flows below the reservoir would maintain the fishery in Cement
Creek. Municipal and domestic water would be made available in or below
the reservoir or by exchange to higher elevations. Irrigation water
would be made available by exchange along East River.
