Cola" wants to
jettison the name lake Powell and replace it with Glen Canyon Reservoir
for the flimsiest of reasons: It technically isn't a lake but a man-made
reservoir and there's another Lake Powell in the Colorado River
watershed,

Don.t be fooled,

The Coalition to Rename lake Powell isn't going down this path for
Iinguislic purity or to end non-existent confusion over two lakes of the
same name.

There is only one reason for this hue and cry, and that's to lend credence
to the coalition's campaign to decommission Glen Canyon Dam and
drain the lake,

In the eyes of the coalition, changing the name to Glen Canyon
Reservoir underscores the fact the lake is man-made, and that beneath
its waters is Glen Canyon, which ought to be restored to its pre-dam
grandeur.

It's a campaign Ihat's hard to take seriously. if for no other reason than
lake Powell's importance to the West. With the drought along the
Colorado River in its fiflh year and lake Powell at about 42 percent of
capacity, ii's unfathomable to Ihink how much worse off we'd be without
Glen Canyon Dam and lake Powell,

That doesn't matter to the coalition, The dam must go, it says, dismissive
of the fact that it stores water for millions of people in Arizona, California
and Nevada; produces power for a million households; and forms a lake
that's vilal to the tourist induslry in northern Arizona,

The decision whether to rename lake Powell ultimately will be up to the
U.S, Board on Geographic Names, which wants to hear from state
boards in Arizona and Utah, Arizona has delayed a decision until Indian
tribes are able to take a position,

This should be a no-brainer for both the state board and the national
board when the matter comes before them in a few months,

lake Powell, an essential part of the economy of Page and the region. is
aptly named and should remain so,

Prinl This I Email This I Most Popular I Subscribe I larger Type I Smaller Type

http://www.azcentral.com/arizonarepublic/opinions/articles/80 1 su02-0 I.html

> azcentral.com

Steve Benson
See whal Q
The Arizona ~ .
Republic's "'.:...
Pulitzer ~I
Prize-
winning cartoonist has
drawn up lately.

Opinions
columns
.
