The United States is fortunately "data rich" in <br /> <br />many respects. Data are usually gathered in relation to "cate- <br /> <br />gorical program areas," e.g., housing data, health data, employ- <br /> <br />ment data, etc. These data have been developed for many pur- <br /> <br />poses: e.g., analyzing progress in the nation toward specific <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />policy objectives (such as reduction in unemployment or infant <br /> <br />mortality rates); for federal subsidy of districts on a formula <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />basis; for national planning of various types, etc. However, <br /> <br />it has not necessarily been developed with social assessment, <br /> <br />per se, in mind.
