AUTHORIZATION

Congress passed the Colorado River Basin Salinity Control Act (Public Law

93-320) on June 24, 1974, which authorized study of several salinity control

units. Subsequent to this Act, Congress passed Public Law 96-375, dated

October 3, 1980, which authorized feasibility level reports at several addi-

tional sites, one of which is the Dirty Devil River Unit.

In June 1975, the seven State Colorado River Basin Salinity Control Forum

endorsed numerical salinity criteria for three points on the lower main stem of

the river, as proposed by the basin states under requirements of Public Law

92-500 and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency regulations. These criteria

provide specific program objectives for the year 2000, allowing for Upper Basin

Compact apportioned water development. If they are to be met, about 2.8 mil-

lion tons of salt will have to be removed from the system each year. The cri-

teria for the three locations are as follows:

Below Hoover Dam

Below Parker Dam

Imperial Dam

723 mg/L
747 mg/L
879 mg/L

IDENTIFIED SOURCES AND CONTROL ALTERNATIVES

The following describes the identified salt sources which have potential for

control based on studies to date. Also described are associated alternatives

for control.

002482

(6)
