Techniques
for storage, use, and handling of fine coal in a powerplant
environment are anticipated to be confirmed. In addition,
the loop is expected to provide data on the following: operating
factors and conditions for the commercial-size system; improved
capital, operating, and maintenance costs; and verification,
improvement, and/or limitations of equipment design. The
following variables will be observed or controlled during
the 9-month testing period.

* Changes in velocity
* Liquid CO2/coal ratio
* Viscosity
* Specific gravity (i.e., bulk density)
* Erosion
* Corrosion
* Pressure drop
* Simulated pipe breakage
* Temperature
* Coal particle size distribution on pumping characteristics
* Coal particle size change during trip
* Transportation characteristics of coal particle sizes
up to 1 by 0 inch in dense media CO2
* Angle of repose of pumped coal
* Solubility of coal in liquid CO2 and vice versa
* Effect of high pressure
* Injection of saline water

Saline water cooling towers are relatively new and operating
experience is limited. However, initial field testing by
other groups has yielded promising results. The concept of
these towers is discussed in more detail in Appendix 1, Related
Technologies. Before saline water cooling towers can be deemed
acceptable, a demonstration to verify reliability for potential
application is essential.

Reclamation, in cooperation with the Colorado River Basin
Salinity Control Forum, is pursuing a technology verification
program and will obtain consulting services to assist in design
and installation of a small saline water cooling tower. A
cost-sharing arrangement among utilities, the tower manufacturer,
and Reclamation is expected to provide for a 2-5 year verification
program. Preliminary discussions have been held with Utah
Power and Light Company regarding siting the saline water
cooling towers at their Hunter Powerplant near Castle Dale,
Utah.

Results of the verification program will also be used to confirm
the economics of using saline water from the Price-San Rafael
River Basin in Utah, Glenwood-Dotsero Springs in Colorado,
and other saline water sources in the Colorado River Basin
for powerplant cooling.

19
