C';)
,.....
c",;
....;
c.. .,

of interest received by Aquatrain, Inc., from potential participants.
The proposed route follow, for the most part, existing corridors
(e.g., highways and existing pipelines), thus reducing certain
environmental impacts. Industry and public comments are now
being sought to evaluate preliminary alternatives. Detailed
environmental analyses along the proposed corridor routes
will be done in the preconstruction planning stage, and corridor
selection will be made after National Environmental Policy
Act requirements have been satisfied.

Sources and Markets'

Conceptually, the pipeline would originate in Wyoming where
saline water, coal deposits, CO2, and other commodities are
readily available. Major depos,ts of trona, an ore from which
soda ash is made, are also available for mining, processing,
and export by AQUATRAIN from southwestern, Wyoming. As the
pipeline travels through Colorado and Utah, it would collect
more saline water and coal as shown in Maps Band C. Powerplants
and industries along the way could take coal and saline water
from the pipeline system for various uses. Along the corridor
routes, there are potential powerplant uses for nearly 200,000
acre-feet of saline water (Figure 2) as well as domestic markets
for 30 million tons of coal per year. At a port facility
on the Pacific Coast, coal could be exported to foreign markets.
When the CO and coal have been separated, the CO2 could be
marketed fo~ use in enhanced oil recovery, welding, beverages,
refrigeration, and chemicals--or be returned for reuse in
the pipeline.

Project Description

As now envisioned, implementation of the AQUATRAIN Project
wi 11 begin with a 14-mile demonstration unit followed by three
distinct stages of pipeline system construction. Each stage
would be initiated based on investments and market demands,
.and subsequent stages may be added as needed.

Demonstration Unit. - The demonstration unit will include
a test loop and a cooling tower using saline water.

Work is expected to begin on construction of a 14-mile demonstration
test loop in 1984, with completion in 1985. The underground
pipeline loop (Figure 3) will be located at a powerplant in
the western United States and will be designed to transport
coal at a rate of 5 million tons per year in a liquid CO2
slurry. Preliminary discussions have been held with Uta"
Power and Light Company regarding locating the test loop at
their Hunter Powerplant near Castle Dale, Utah.

The demonstration loop, using commercial-size equipment, is
needed to fully verify (1) the liquid CO2/coal slurry technology

13
