Reservoir Regulations and Opportunities

Guidelines for managing the recreation use on McPhee Reservoir
have been completed by the Forest Service. The guidelines are a
result of a 6 month planning effort which included extensive
public involvement through meetings, letters, and work sessions.
An advisory committee comprising of local residents provided
excellent input and will continue to assist the Forest Service in
the future. The guidelines include:

1. Camping within the McPhee Recreation Complex and the House
Creek Recreation area is allowed only within developed
campsites.

2. Camping will be allowed through-out the remaining reservoir
area. The standard 14 day stay limit will apply.

3. A "no-wake" zone is in effect on the three arms of the
reservoir. This restriction is designed to increase safety
and to emphasize activities such as fishing. The no-wake
zone will begin at the mouth of the House Creek and Dry
Canyon arms and approximately one and one half miles up the
Beaver Creek arm. Buoys designate the no-wake zones.

4. Campfires will be permitted outside of the developed sites.

1. Fishing

Fishing is a major activity on the reservoir and along the
shoreline. Fisherman access is provided at the two recreation
complexes and four parking sites around the reservoir. The
McPhee Complex provides parking, flush toilets, potable water, a
fish cleaning station and two courtesy docks. The House Creek
Complex provides parking, vault toilets and potable water and a
courtesy dock.

The Colorado Division of Wildlife is responsible for the
enforcement of state fishing laws.

MC PHEE RESERVOIR IS MANAGED AS A TWO STORY LAKE: THAT IS,
IT SUPPORTS COMMUNITIES OF BOTH COLD AND WARM WATER FISH.
NEARLY 450,000 THREE INCH MC CONAUGHY RAINBOW TROUT WILL BE
STOCKED ANNUALLY IN MC PHEE. INTRODUCTORY STOCKING OF
WARMWATER FISH SPECIES WILL BE DONE WHILE MC PHEE IS
FILLING. ONCE ESTABLISHED, WARMWATER FISH SPECIES SHOULD BE
ABLE TO MAINTAIN THEIR NUMBERS BY NATURAL REPRODUCTION WITH
NO FURTHER STOCKING REQUIRED.

THE MC CONAUGHY STRAIN OF RAINBOW TROUT WAS STOCKED IN MC
PHEE BECAUSE OF ITS GREATER TOLERANCE TO WARM WATER
CONDITIONS. THEY GROW TO A LARGE SIZE WHEN FORAGE FISH ARE
