It does not have everylhing you have come to expect in a major <br />metropolis-sales laX. gridlock!. smog. It is a large city that has managed to maintain its smalHown charm. <br />Packed into a convenient natural environment. Portland is accessible and complete. <br />Portland is located in northwestern Oregon at the northern end of the Willamette Valley and at the <br />confluence of the Columbia and Willamette River. To the east is the Cascade Mountain Range, to the west the <br />Coastal Range. The average high 1\..1ay temperature is 6]0 F; the average low temperature is 470,F. Average <br />May rainfall is about 2 inches. The population wilhin the Portland city limits is abnut 443.000. In the <br />surrounding metropolitan area. which includes five counties. the population is nearly 1.4 million. <br />Porlland's downtown area is scaled to human dimensions. It is "foot friendly:' and was recently named <br />among the Top 10 American Walking Cities by Walking Magazine. The visitor who explores downtown <br />Portland is never overwhelmed. but intrigued and amused. Cafes. restaurants. bookstores, galleries, and <br />specialty stores are waiting around every comer. Green-suited concierges known as "Portland Guides" walk <br />through downtown streets day and night answering questions and helping wilh directions. <br />Tri-Met, Portland's mass transit system. is a national model of efficiency when it comes to carrying <br />commuters. Fareless Square, a 340-block region encompassing much of the downtown area. allows you to ride <br />Tri.Met for free. "MAX:' Tri-Met's light rail train system, connects downtown to the Oregon Convention <br />Center. Memorial Coliseum. and the Lloyd business and retail district. <br />Dozens of parks in all shapes and sizes dot the entire city. One-hundred-acre Washington Park in lhe west <br />hills above Portland encompasses the International Rose Test Gardens, with more than 400 varieties of roses; <br />the peaceful contemplation of the Japanese Gardens; and the Portland Zoo. with its world-class elephant exhibit. <br />Washington Park also provides a breathtaking panorama of Portland with Mount Hood in the background. <br />Downtown's many flOe shops and malls. or a walking tour of historical sites. fountains, and buildings can easily <br />fill an afternoon. How about a cruise on the WiJlamette River via sternwheeler just after your last session to <br />end a long day? <br />AlIhough there is much to discover within Portland'scity limits. nearby day trips open whole neW worlds. <br />It is only a 56-mile drive to Mount Hood. Oregon's highest peak. which has an 11,235-foot summit famed for <br />its year-round skiing. <br />To the west of Portland lies the Oregon C08St-400 miles of pristine public beach. State parks with picnic <br />facilities span the entire coast. and charter boats operate year-round, puUing in catches of salmon. luna. and <br />bottom fish; steelhcad fishing from the banks of the many streams that flow into the Pacific is another popular <br />activity. <br />Flanked by Mount Hood and Washington's Mount Adams. the distinctively Oregon views from the <br />Columbia River Gorge can be reached in less than half an hour.
