<br />Fla1TJ.ing Gorg:c Dam is located on the Green River in northeastern Utah, abQut
<br />40 ,road miles n:orth of Vernal, Utah, and 32 rivor miles downstrea,m from the
<br />Utah'" Wyoming :State line. The dam. is a concrete thin-arch structure rising 502
<br />feet above bed~ock., The reservoir has a capacity of 3,789,000 acre-feet and,
<br />when full, wHl extend upstream 91 miles, nearly to the town of Green River,
<br />'Wyo. The Fla:ming Gorge storage unit has two principal functions-develop-
<br />ment of water resources in the upper basin by providing long-term storaKo regula-
<br />tion of the flow Of the Green River and generation of electrical energy. Revenues
<br />from the sale oC;power will be used to help pay construction costs of the dam and
<br />reservoir and assist in repa~ment of irrigation costs of participating projects. ,
<br />The National: Park SerVICe and U .8. Forest Service have cooperated closely in
<br />developing recreational sites on ,Flaming Gorge Lake. Recreation facilities have
<br />been developed:at Lucerne Valley, Antelope Flats, Buckboard Crossing, Dutch
<br />John Draw, and Cedar Springs, where boat ramps, picnic and campground areas,
<br />concession facilities, etc., are available for publiC use. .Boat ramps.are in use at
<br />three other sites on the central and upper portions of the lake. A visitor cente r
<br />at Flaming Gorge D~tm .is operated .jointly by the National Pnrk Service, the
<br />U .8. Forest Service, and the Bureau of Reclamation.
