Description of work:
A requested new start Hypothesis Testing study (RIP new
emphasis: Management on Non-native Fishes) by the UDWR and LFL.
Objectives of the study would be:
1) To identify and assess factors that limit the distribution
and abundance of all non-salmonid, non-native fishes by
taking a life history and zoogeographical perspective.
2) To evaluate the potential impact of northern pike on YOY
Colorado squawfish in Utah.
3) To identify and evaluate potential methods for selectively
controlling the impacts of non-native on endangered fish.

Researchers from the LFL will review existing literature
regarding factors that limit the distribution and abundance of
non-natives in their historical range. Data sources would
include existing literature, endangered fish data bases, and
laboratory and museum collections. UDWR researchers will
investigate potential impact of northern pike on YOY Colorado
squawfish in the Green River, Utah. Bioenergetics models will
be used to estimate the prey base necessary to support northern
pike populations and investigate potential impact of northern
pike populations on Colorado squawfish recruitment to adult
stages. UDWR will also identify and evaluate potential methods
for selectively controlling non-native fishes, including flow
manipulation and removal. This study could potentially be used
to refine flow recommendations for every season by identifying
possible flows which would inhibit undesirable non-native
species.
- Hypotheses to be Tested: 3,9,12

Deliverables:
LFL will submit a summary report by the end of the fiscal year
detailing potential non-native fish management strategies .that
could be evaluated. UDWR will submit an annual report detailing
northern pike studies and management recommendations and an
annual report on evaluation of potential methods to control or
remove non-native predators and competitors.

1992 Budget I:
UDWR LFL2
- Labor $44,500 $ 5,000
- Travel $ 4,500 $ 1,000
- Report $ 1,500 $ 1,000
- Total $50,500 $ 6,500
- Grand Total $57.000

IDoes not include FWS overhead

2Funds for LFL contracted through UDWR

B7
