The major soil type is
Billings Silty Clay Loam, 0-2% slope, AWC for the 60" rooting depth is 10.2", Sand and gravel in the
irrigation water caused problems with the operation of the valve, Because of this and the amount of
water pressure on the valve, difficulty in getting the valve to switch from side to side was encountered,
The irrigation system used was gated pipe,
1993: The cooperator felt that because of the problems he had encountered in 1992 that this field
was not suitable for surge,

FARM # 02

I 992: The surge demonstration plot consisted of 4.5 acres and was compaI'ed with a conventional;:/<, I
plot of 43,5 acres, The crop grown is alfalfa with a restrictive root zone of 60", The major soil type is
a deep Mesa Clay Loam overlying gravelly well drained substratum, 0-3 % slope, AWC for the 60"
rooting depth is 7.5". This field has extremely long fUlTOWS and is irrigated in three different directions
because of the rolling contour of the ground, This caused a substantial amount of crossover washing to
occur, The irrigation system used was gated pipe,
1993: Because of the present irrigation configuration on this field, it was not possible to bIing more
of this field under surge. It was decided to allow the cooperator to keep the surge unit and to help when
requested, but this field was not monitored for data collection,

FARM # 03

1992: The surge demonstration plot consisted of 16 acres and was compared with a conventional
plot of 5 acres, The crop grown on this site was com with a restrictive root zone of 42", The major soil
type is Billings Silty Clay Loam, 0-2% slope, AWe for the 60" rooting depth is 102". This field has
a tendency of being very cloddy and preparation of a good seed bed is difficult.
The inigation system used is gated pipe,

Page 30 .
