availability of surface water and occurrence of precipitation (Hurr and
others, 1975).

At locations where tributaries discharge into the SOuth Platte River, the

alluvial aquifer widens and, in some instances, extends up tributary

drainages (Figure 8). Examples include segments of Box Elder, Bijou,

Kiowa, Beaver, and Lone Tree Creeks, the downstream reach of the Cache

la poudre River, and Beebe Draw. These aquifers yield as much as

2,000 gal/min (Engineering Consultants, Inc. and Toups Corporation, 1974).

Beebe Draw, a narrow valley located approximately 10 miles east of

Platteville, extends from Barr Lake to the Scuth Platte River at La Salle

(Figure 8). Well yields in this area range between 475 and 1,800 gal/min,

and the alluvium in this area contains an estimated 320,000 acre-feet of

storage. The width of the alluvium of Box Elder Creek ranges between 1 and

3.5 miles, and its thickness is a maximum of 85 feet. Alluvial deposits

are 5 to 10 miles wide in Bijou Creek, and 1 to 3 miles wide in Kiowa

Creek. Nearly 2.9 million acre-feet of ground water are estimated to be

stored in the alluvial aquifer of the Bijou Creek sub-basin. The width of

the alluvium of the Beaver Creek valley is estimated to range from 3 to

5 miles. The thickness of the Beaver Creek valley alluvium is reported to

range between 55 and 120 feet, and irrigation wells yield from 200 to

1,200 gal/min. The storage of ground water in the alluvium of the Beaver

Creek sub-basin is estimated to be 584,000 acre-feet. The downstream reach

of the Cache la poudre River and its downstream tributaries are underlain

by alluvial deposits that range from 1 to 5 miles in width. The thickness

of the alluvium ranges between 30 and 80 feet. The average thickness of

alluvium of Lone Tree Creek, a tributary of the Cache 1a poudre River, is

40 feet (Engineering Consultants, Inc. and Toups Corporation, 1974).

-34-

I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
