4

CRBSCP and CRfrQIP

ponds. and other necessary associated works could be
induded. An ahernalh'e deep-well injection plan is also
being considered. which appears to be more cost dfec-
tin" than the evaporation pond plan.

Grand Valley Unit. - This Colorado unit will consist
of measures and works to reduce seepa~e of irrigation
water from canals and lalerals, limit ex(:ess water appli-
cations to irrigated lands, and improve onfarm practices.
The unit i~ being de.,eloped in 1\'0'0 stages to alia..... the
Bureau of Reclamation to begin construction in a por-
tion of the \'sllt'}, where plans and designs are com.
plete. where sufficient data are 8\'ailable to assess im-
pacts of initial development while im.'cstigalions and
planning continue on the rest of the unit, and where
em:ironmental impacts would not be significant. On
Stage 1, 6.8 miles of the GO\'ernment Highline Canal
ha,-e been concrete lined and cross-drainage facilities
ha"e been ('ompleted. Construction began in 1981 to
consolidate 13 open channel laterals that service the area
under the newly lined portion of the Go"ernment
Highline Canal into 12 pipe laterals. A moss and debris
removal structure has been plal'l~d at the beginning of
the canal lining. COllstrudion of Stage 1 was essentiall)'
complete at the beginning of the 1983 irrigation season.
Stage 2 investigations Legan in 1981 and are continuing.
A draft supplement to the March 1980 Definite Plan
Report was prepared in June 1983. A separate brochure
on the Grand Valley Unit is a,'ailable from the Bureau
of Redamation.

La.'i Vegas rf/ash Unit. - This Ne,-ada unit has under.
gone a reformulation because of ('hanging ground-water
conditions. The major new finding was that the salt
loading was induced by the disposal of wastewater into
wasteways or basins which leach salt from the underlying
88line geologic deposits. A recommended solution is to
channel the waatewater around the saline deposits. which
would reduce the leaching and salt loading. A 3.5-mile
hypass pipeline in a ,-erificatiorl program is expected to
he built in fiscal }'ear 1984.

Crystal Geyser Unit. - This Utah unit would be im-oh-.
ed in the e-oUecting and disposing of saline geyser dis-
charges. Additional studies ha,'e indicated that construc-
tion of this unit would not be cost effecth'e at thi!'1 time,
and further studies ha,'e been presently terminated.

COWRADO RIVER WATER QUAUTY
IMPROVEMENT PROGRAM

Further studies and research have been authorized on
other salinity control units for the Colorado Rh-er Basin:

. Palo Verde Irrigation District Unit in Riverside
County. California.

. Lower Virgin River Unit in Clark and l\Ioha,-e
Counties of Nevada and Arizona.
. LaVerkin Springs Unit in Washington Count)',
Utah.
. Uinta Basin Unit in Dudw",ne and LIin'ah Counlie~,
Utah.
. Price-San Rafael River Unit. and
. Dirty Devil River Unit. which are in Emery, Car-
hOIl. Wayne, and Garfield Counties. Utah.
. lHcElmo Creek Unit in San Juan and Montezuma
Counties of Utah and Colorado.
. Glenwood-Dotsero Springs Unit in Garfield County.
Colorado.
. Lower Gunnison Basin Unit in Delta, Montrose,
and Ouray Counties, Colorado.
. Big Sand)" River Unit in Sweetwater County,
Wyoming.
. AJeeker Dome Unit in Rio Blanco Count}', Colo-
rado.

The I\:leeker Dome Unit was placed 011 the im:estigationR
program at the request of the State of Colorado. The
Saline rf/ater Use and Disposal Opportunities Unit. a
multistate unit, has also e,:oh'ed as a possible means of
using saline water in industry, and for reducing the
salinity ('oncentrations at Imperial Dam.

Since 1972, intensified feasibility in,"estigations have
been underway on rliviRions or units of the Colorado
River Water Quality Improvement Program. These
ilwf'stigations will de,'e1op information for construe-tion
of additional units to help control those areas that are
contrihuting to the salinity of the Colorado Rh'er.
Nonstructural ~tudies have been made to redu('e the
salinity ('ontributed to the ri,-er through improved
irrigation management practices and an Irrigation
Management Ser,'ires (lMS) irrigation system impro,-e-
ment program. Bee-ause of lack of support hy the irri.
gators, the IMS program has been terminated.

Significant modification may be found in the project
plan during the preconstruct ion stage of inn'stigations or
during the preparation of final designs of project fea-
tures.

Uinta Basin Unit. - Studies have identified certain
reaches of canals and laterals for lining to reduce salt
loading where cost effecti,-e.

,'YfcElmo Creek Unit. -- Methods for removing sah
include comhining and lining some canals, and lining
sections of other canals where cost effecti,'e.

Glenwood-Dotsero Springs Unit. - Salt remo'-al plans
include collecting the saline water from both Glem'fOod
and Dotsero Springs and disposing this saline water in an
