o
(.-)
....
W
<:'0
VI

is little or no dependence on it locally and tberefore structures wbicb
can capture and bold the water, for whatever purpose, are viewed favor-
ably. Also, in this same clilllatic zone are areas located to the nortb
and soutb of the AWR Basins that tbere se~ to be tbe most concern
about depletion of streamflow.

A number of studies have been IIIlode, are under way, or are proposed
in this general area in regard to effects of upstream reservoirs upon
downstream water yield. Some are or will be ratber quick appraisals
based on available data and others will be more detailed involving
collection of all sorts of relative data during a period of years before
conclusions are attempted.

a. Ten Basin Study

The largest undertaking is that which the Soil Conservation Service
has planned in cooperation with the U. S Geological Survey to study ten
creek wa tersbeds; seven in Texas, two in Oklahoma, and one in Arkansas.
The study includes instrumentation, collection of data for a number of
years, and analyses at an estimated cost of more than $600,000 in five
years. Much of the instrumentation is already done. The study areas
are shown in the table below.

State

Basin

Creek

Texas

San Antonio River

Calaveras
Escondido
Cow Bayou
Green
Mukewater
Deep and Dry Prong Deep
Honey

Brazos River

Middle Colorado River

Trinity River

Oklaboma

Washita River
Ganey River

Sandstone
Double

Arkansas

Arkansas River

Six Mile

This study is referred to in the paper entitled "Investigations of
the Hydrology of Small Watersheds in Texas," presented by Trigg Twichell,
District Engineer of the U. S. Geological Survey, at the ASCE meeting in
Dallas, Texas, February l5, 1956, and in the paper entitled "Soil Con-
servation and Upstream Engineering in the Western Gulf States," whicb
was presented by Cbarlie M.
