IJ~,::

.

.

The Jac~son Public Use Area includes the lands around Jackson
Reservoir and its 2,500-acre water surface. It has been proposed
to repair the dam and maintain Jackson Reservoir at three-fourths
its full capacity, while the other al ternati ve would be to dry up
the pool. To eliminate Jackson Reservoir would be a mistake,
since the recreation potential of the site would then be reduced
to zero and the chance to obtain valuable recreation land and
water-oriemted recreation opportunities would be lost. A
stable pool maintained for recreation and fish and wildlife
purposes would be an asset to the overall project since it would
not be affected by fluctuation of the main pool. The site can
be included within the continuous takeline and management would
be the same as for any public use area at Narrows Reservoir. For
purposes of this report, it is assumed that Jackson Reservoir
will be retained and that opportunities for picnicking and camping
will be available at the site. With the reservoir at three-fourths
its water capacity, an excellent beach will surround the pool
and the developnent of a swimming area should be simple. Possibly
the water surface can be zoned to low wake motor boating, and thus
create an atmosphere favorable for sailboating, canoeing, hunting
and fishing. Fishing is reported to be good in the reservoir.
Unlike the main pool, the shoreline of Jackson Reservoir is blessed
wi th Some tree growth.

The South Shore Public Use Area contains the high prominent
ground near the midsection of the reservoir. Pool drawdowns
along this segment -will expose little shore which is not true
on the north side. Access to the site is available off the
Interstate Highway and U. S. Highway 34 via the Goodrich Road.

Facilities will be needed for picnicking, overnight and organized
camping, boating, water skiing, swimming and sightseeing. The
SEtSwt of Sec. 35 is the ideal location for ])lacement of an
overlook. Also, the south shore has slopes that will allow boat
ramps to be functional at most pool levels. Horseback riding
could become an important activity at this site.

VII. ADDITIONAL RECREATION LAND

To adequately provide space for the recreation activities proposed
at each use area, it is necessary to secure additional land for
public access, future expansion, placement of initial facilities,
protection of project and facilities, and limiting undesirable
land use adjacent to the recreation area. The additional land
required is shown on the General Development MIlp.

.

10
