WIldlife habitat In the flood pool would be affected through occasional InundatIon. Deer habitat would be destroyed In the Impoundment as a result of inundation but because of low deer population and I'Ight huntIng, the 1055 would be InsignIfIcant. All upland-game habitat within the joInt use pool would be Inundated, and habitat within the flood pool area would be flooded occasionally. WIth the project, about 10,000 man-days of upland-game hunting would remain In the flood pool area. ThIs huntIng would consist of 5,000 man-days of pheasant huntIng, 2,500 man-days of rabbIt hunting, 1,500 man-days of mourning-dove huntIng, and \,000 man-days of quaIl hunt- I ng annua II y. Narrows Reservoir would elIminate Important waterfowl nestIng and wintering habitat along 15.5 miles of the South Platte River withIn the JoInt use pool of Narrows Reservoir. The reservoir would replace the lost waterfowl wintering habItat but the quality of the habitat would be inferior to that of the exIsting river bottom because of 1055 of edge, food, and shelter. Narrows Reservoir would provide waterfowl hunting opportunities for the general publlc'ln an area where publIc huntIng 15 very limited. Bays and coves would provIde good huntIng. Waterfowl hunting on Nar- rows Reservoir would average about 21,500 man-days annually. There would be a gain of 5,600 man-days of waterfowl hunting annually with the project. Waterfowl nesting habitat would be destroyed within the joint use pool of Narrows Reservoir and a productIon of 900 ducks In the flood control pool only would remaIn. ThIs would result In a net production 1055 of about 1,000 ducks annually for the Narrows Reservoir site as a whole. Because of Its large sIze, the reservoIr would attract wintering water- fowl from the entire South Platte Valley. An average of about 60,000 ducks and 1,200 geese would be expected to winter on the reservoIr. With the project, annual wintering use would Increase to about ~,500,OOO waterfowl use-days, a gain of 3,000,000 waterfowl use-days annually.
