000984

Report of the Regional Director

.

PLAN OF li':VELOi'ill2< T

3l..t. The plan of developlJent req'lires constr\X:tion of the
potential Braziel Reservoir on Dry ;reek Drain, located between the
Ft. Laramie Canal and the Horse Creek Lateral, for tre dual purpose
of better regulating deliveries from that canal am conserving waters
no;or wasted because of present regulating cond! tions.

.35. Lands that will benefit most directly from the reservoir now
receive water froc the ft. Laramie :anal. The al~a has been under
irrigation for ~ore than twenty years. The topography is level to
~ently rolling. Soils are of good quality and range froD fairly
heavy light colored loa~ to sandy loam. Drainage conditions are
fair although some seeped areas are evident as a result of inadequate
drains or because of heavy soils that do not readily drain. There
is evidence of alkalinity L~ some areas but beoause of the absence of
any analysis in recent years the type and degree of concentration
.:ire not !mown.

.

36. Water rights for the Pathfinder Reservoir totalling
1,070,000 acre-feet have priorities dated December 6, 1904, as a
result of filings with the 8tates of !lebraska and Wyoming. The Gering
& Ft. Laramie Irrigation District established rights to 184 second-
feet by filing on Septe~ber 19, 1904, in Nebraska, and on December h,
1904, and ,~pril 20, 1923, in Wyoming. lhe Goshen Irrigation District
has ri;hts to 722 second-feet established by filings dated December 6,
1904, April 20, 1923, and January 20, 1932, in Wyoming.

37. Construction of the Eraziel Heservoir would not materially
alter present cropping patterns. By conserving water now wasted
and by providing better regulation of the existing l'rater supnly,
crop .yields should be improved. However, it is extrerely difficult
to estimate the degree or extent of the probable improver.lent. Land
....alues will be affected only slightly. r!o settlement opportunities
Trill be created. About 8,100 acres of presently irrigated lands,
served by the Horse :;reek Lateral belrn', JJI"".f Creek !:rain, would receive
direct benefits from the reservoir; the rC!!laiooer of the two districts
would benefi t indirectly.

36. The ~raziel Reservoir site lies within the boundary of the
Gering & Ft. Laramie Irrigation District. Upon completion of con-
struction, the reservoir would be operated in conjunction wi th the
works of that district. ~a developcent period prior to initiation
of repay:n~nt 5 would be required.

39. Preliminary cost estimates of the potential Braziel
Reservoir, on the basis of February 1948 nrices, are as follows, all
of whic!1 would be allocated to irrigation:

9

.

(~ev.)
