They held the
door open to change the claims as work
proceeds on the Endangered Fish Recovery
Program.

The action to keep the base-flow claims and
drop the recovery flow claims was approved 8-
O.

It came after an attempt by Greg Walcher,
newly appointed director of the Colorado
Department of Natural Resources, to withdraw
both the recovery and base flow filings.
Walcher's motion failed 6-2 in a board vote.

At issue is a set of four instream flow filings
made by the state water board in December
1995 to protect flows for fish in the Yampa and
Colorado rivers. The claims have yet to be
approved by state water court.

The Colorado River filings were focused on the
15-mile reach of the Colorado River from
Palisade to the confluence of the Gunnison
River, in the Grand Valley. The 15-mile reach is
considered to be excellent habitat for native
fish, but irrigation diversions reduce flows in the
stretch during the summer months.

http://www.gjsentinel.com/news/1999/01/29waterI.html

From

~

Quick Clicks:
~ Talk about this
story
~ Police blotter
~ Dealt} notices
~ Weather
~ News archive

Latest local
news:
Feb,1
.
