Pumping from the reservoir into the <br />aqueduct was begun October 7, 1942, at which time the water level <br />had risen approximately to elevation 4:30, The water surface was <br />gradually increa,;ed to elevation 450 feet, or full reservoir, by <br />March 194:\. and remained close to this level during the remainder <br />of the fiscal year, <br />The construction of the puwer plallt at Parker Dam alld installa- <br />tion of equipment were completed by the Bureau of Reclamation, <br />The Parker power plant is located on the California side of the <br />river immediately below the dam, and contains four vertical hy- <br />draulic turbine generator units capable uf operating under a gross <br />head varying from 64 to 87 feet. Water is diverted from Lake <br />Havasu through a trash rack ~tructllre into a forebay excavated in <br />the rock of the river "ank, From the fore"ay, steel-lined penstock <br />tunnels, 22 feet in diameter, excavated through rock admit water <br />to the plate-steel sCI'oll cases of the hydraulic turbines, A steel <br />slide gate, 22 feet b)' :\5 feet, operated by a gantry crane, is in- <br />stalled at the upper end of each penstock, <br />The hydraulic turbines are of the vertical-shaft, single-runner, <br />Francis type, and were manufactured by the S. Morgan Smith <br />Company, Each has a rated output of 40,000 horsepower at a head <br />of 80 feet and operate,; at a speed of 94,7 revolutions per minute, <br />Best turbine eflicienc)' was specified at 36,000 horsepower at a head <br />of 80 feet.
