It originates in the rugged San Juan <br />Mountains in Colorado, enters New Mex1co near Rosa, and flows approximatoly 90 miles <br />through the sta,te before 1:e-entering Colora,do. <br /> <br />The Navajo, Piedra, Pine and AnimB.s Rivers are the ma.in tributaries of. the <br />San Juan f{1ver. The Animas River was not inc1udeu in this project since it enters <br />the Ss,n Juan River below the Na,vajo Dam. <br /> <br />As a result of ' the Upper Colorado River Storage program the Navajo 0,1.In wa,s <br />proposed [or the San Juan River and 1s now under construction, approxima,tely 14 <br />miles nOl'theast of Blanco" New Mexico. The construction wi 11 be completed by Septeln- <br />bel' 1962, howe,.rer, water impoundment,wl,ll start uuring the spring of 1962. <br /> <br />The purpose of this reha,billta.ti.on project Was to eliminate the present trash <br />fish populations in the San Juan River and tributa,ries upstream from the dam site. <br />Since th" waters impounded by the Navil.jo l),1ffi will extend into Colorado, both states <br />cooporated with this project, This report will include only the New Mexico pOI.'tion <br />o[ the proJec.t. Our pOl't10n of the rehabilitation project included 15 miles of the <br />P,no River, 30 miles of the San Juan Rival', and approximately sil<: miles of the <br />Navajo Rivnr, A total of ,51 miles o[ WB.te1:'S wa,s troateu. <br /> <br />When the project W,9s initia.ted, tho possibility existed of having neIJ,rly <br />20,000 acre-Ceet of wa.ter impounded by the beginning of the rotenoning. This <br />po~sibj,bil1ty could not be disregarded, thel'efo,'c, the initiaL planning included this <br />volume of wa.ter a,S a part of the project. <br /> <br />-The 1:'eha,bilita,C1on project started September 7, 1961. There was no wa.ter im- <br />pounded at this time, so one phasa of the project was eli"inated. <br /> <br />n:.clmi..Q\lllli: <br /> <br />Liquid NOKfish with five percent active rotenone ingredients was used, Stream <br />[1m,s wer" determined and the amount of rotenone required \Jas calC,ulated. <br /> <br />1'11" rotenone was applied at three different points along both the San Juan and <br />l'ine Rl.vers. The upper sta.tion on the Pin" River tJas located a.t the COIOl'ado-New <br />V-exico at.teline near La, Boca., Colorado.
