} Save S. Platte

,
~\\lIAT DO YOU get when you cross a
'tUlle Tennessee Hi,'ef snail darter with a
_.South Platte River Pay,nee Montane Skip-
per butterfly?
Possibly, you would get a small, ex().
,{kally colored flying minnow which would
'batch from a cocoon and qualify for the
lnkrior Dt>partrnent's endangered-species
jlst. Then you could introduce It to key
stretches of the many threatened trout
-streams leIt in the country and presum.
:Ilbl)' save all of them from extinction due
1.0 construction of dams.
r,.. I, like many other fishermen, nature
lovers and amateur environmentalists,
~m all for anythIng which stops further
'destruction of trout streams.
::: But stopping it because of snail darters
,~od rare butterflies is doing it for the
.. wrong reasons.
, FOR THOSE WHO may have missed it,
the :;;nniI darter is a nearly extinct fish in
the Little Tennessee RIver. Protected by
the national Endangered species Act, this
obscure minnow-found nowhere else that
anybody kno\\"S about-has resulted in
halting t'Ol'lStroction on the almost finished
$1l9 million Telliro Dam.
The Pa""nee Montane SkIpper butterfly
(maybe the better word would be gadfly)
Is the South PlaUe's equivalent of the
snail Jarter-or at least, it could be.
I The critter makes its home along 12
' mfles of the South Platte canyon near
Dem'er. Is isn't your e,'eryday butterfly.
I You .....on.t find one in the back-yard rose
. garden. The stretch of the Platte It lnhab-
! Us just happens to be among the 17 miles
; ot the river's South Fork that would be
t Inundflted by Ille long-plann~ Two fwks
1 Dam near the confluence of the North and
'South Forks.
I The U.S. Fish and wildlife Senice has
\ nominatl'd the butterfly for inclusion on
the endangerl'd-spccies list and also
proposes to declare that 12-mile section
"critical habitat" lor the "Skipper." or
"Pa"'nee" or whatever we should call it.
Either one of those actions could block
construction of Two Forks, which would
be built by the U.S. Bureau of Redama-
! tion and used for water stora.ge by the
Denver Water Board. Plans for the dam
are dormant. despite the fact the water
board says the storage capability it ....wld
provide is imperative to the area's future.
As a trout fisherman and outdoorsman
who loves rivers and their canyons, I'm
tempted to praise God for rare butterflies
land minnows. But I'll say it again: If this
butterfly causes the demise of Two
I Forks, which deserves killing, It will be
deat.b lor the wrong cause. Killing Two
Forks can be viewed as justifiable
t Said Bermingham, "I don't think we
have to resort to a lousy little butterf-
Bermingham probably doesn't have
anything more (or less) "tgainst but-
terflies, endangered or otherwise. than [
for Right Reasons!

minds of a lot of people against Two
Forks inclurles a lot of good reasons. And
they have nothing to do with a butterfly
that most people couldn't ldentify if it
flew up their noses.
Why don.t we sa~'e those 17 miles of the
main.stem Platte and the lesser mileage
of the north fork simply because the river
etists?
Particularly in the case of the South
Fork. we are talking abo\.!t probably thE'
best trout stream in America that is
v.ithin 50 miles of a metropolitan area of
more than a million people.
There is nothing that can compare to it,
unless )'Ou count the steelhead or salmon
rivers within similar distances of places
like Portland, Ore.. or Seattle. But such. a
comparison isn't valid because there ls a
difference between a trout stream and a
steelhead-salmonrlver.
The South Platte has stream-bred wild
browns and rainbows that spawn, li~'e
and die in the river. The Pacific :-':orth-
west rivers carry anadronous fish. which
spend most of their time in salt water.
Even If one doesn't fish for trout. or
know the different between a rainbow and
a catfish, he would have to be callous to
tho grandeur of a great natural re9:lUrce
to dismiss the South Platte Canyon as
just another trickle of water through the
rocks. It Is a spectacular. scenic wonder,
which is the home for a variety of ri\'er-
area wildlife aside from the trout that
fishermen catch.
I DOS'T CAnE if I never see another
Pawnee Montane Skipper butterfly and,
in fact, I don't know whether I've seen
one yet. But I do care if I never again
see a trout rise in a sun-sparkled riffle.
or a beaver dam on a side channel, or a
deer crossing a wlllowy island, or a water
ouzel bobbing in the shalJows.
I do care if the Arkansas River or the
Cache la poudre becomes known as the
only trout stream of major consequence
on the Eastern Slope, because either one
would be a poor substitute_
I do care if someday my now-12-year-
old daughter would have to point out into
the middle of a lake and tell her own
children that she caught her first trout on
a lly rod in a ri,'er that's under 100 feet
of water.
I do care if the construction 01 Two
Forks-or for that matter. FOothllls_
speeds up the process by which the Front
Range strip cities become the Los An-
gelesof the Rocky Mountains.
There are alternatives to Two Forks.
and they should be COnsidered for all of
these and a list of other reasons.
One of the lowest on that list. as far as
this writer Is concerned, is an obscure
l)'ltterfly.
Why should we protect the South
Platte? To paraphrase the mountain
climbers. because it's there.
