.

.

The next operation meeting
needing information about
Fazzan or Rege Leach at the

will be held on March 1997. Anyone
daily operations please contact Don
Durango Office at (970) 385-6500.

Glen Canyon - Inflow to Lake Powell in January began its rise to
above average flows, 120 percent of normal for the month. Inflow
is expected to continue above average through the remaining winter
months in expectation of a large spring runoff. The forecasted
April - July unregulated runoff is now estimated to be 13.2 MAF,
171 percent of normal, a further increase from previous months.
The current basin wide snowpack is about 156 percent of normal.
Releases will be at or near 20,000 cfs through Tuesday morning
February 18, 1997 at 6 am, when flows will be increased until a
release of 27,000 cfs is reached. Releases for the remainder of
the month of February are expected to remain at 27,000 cfs but
could increase if the forecasted April - July inflow continues to
rise. At this point in time we anticipate flows greater than
20,000 cfs to continue through July 1997. Updates to this writeup
will be made frequently to provide the most accurate information to
interested parties.

For the next year or two, releases to safely control the spring
runoff and to equalize storage between Lakes Powell and Mead are
expected to control the annual release volume from Lake Powell.
With the current forecast, Lake Powell will fill this spring, and
releases will be much greater than the annual minimum objective
release of 8.23 MAF (a release of 14.1 MAF is currently expected
for water year 1997) .

The Colorado River Management Wor.k .(}roup meetings to discuss the
1998 Annual Operating Plan for the entire Colorado River have
commenced--our next meeting is scheduled for 9:30 am, April 11,
1997, at McCarren Airport in Las Vegas, NY. Key issues are
expected to be the development of surplus and shortage criteria for
lower basin consumptive use and the management of the 1997 runoff.
For further information contact Randall Peterson at (801)524-3715
or Jayne Harkins at (702)293-8190.
