Tentative sizing of Ridges Basin Reservoir provides about 190,000 acre-
feet of inactive capaci~, as compared with 90,000 acre-feet of active
capacity. The large inactive pool, scenic setting and closeness to the
City of Durango would give it a tremendouse recreation and fishery potential.

The plan would provide an underground lateral system with pressure for
sprinkler irrigation which will reduce both labor and water requirements.
The latter will reduce the detrimental effect of the project on the quality
of water in the Colorado River.

The plan would eliminate approximately 10,000 acres of presently unfarmed
lands derived from saline shsJ.es located in the McDermott and MeadOWS areas
in New Mexico. The project would then serve only high quality sandy-loam
soils, thus holding the project's contribution of salt in the Colorado River
t.o less than half that for the plan as authorized.

~~

f'
,

-;

"

Water that would have originally been used on the McDermott and Meadows
areas will now be ava11.able t.o meet fa.st growing municipal and industrial
water neaWl in New MexiCO.

J":
~:

I'

:~'.

11
