The report also included a plan for flood control on Bear Creek
by means of a reservoir at the Mount Carbon site. However, this plan was
not included in the plan of improvements recommended for authorization
because of insufficient economic justification at that time.

c. A report on the flood problelllS of Bear Creek issued in 1941 by
the Corps of Engineers was printed as House Document Numbered 356, Seventy-
eighth Congress, First Session. This report provided a review of the Bear
Creek flood problems considered in the 308 Report, Platte River, Colorado,
Wyoming and Nebraska, which had been published as House Document Numbered
197, Seventy-third Congress, Seccnd Session. The report recommended
flood control DW!asures involving channel cleaning and enlargement at
Morrison, Colorado. The local protection channel improvement project
was authorized by the Flood Control Act of 1944. Subsequent road relocaticns
precluded construction of the improvement as designed and reduced the
initial flood vulnerability at Morrison. The project has since been in
inacti ve status.

Ii:. DESCRIPTION OF THE BASIN

4. LOCATION AND EXTENT

.,

Bear Creek is a left bank tributary of the South Platte River which
rises in the Rocky Mountains at Summit Lake on Mount Evans and flows
easterly for 45 miles to its junction with the South Platte River at
Sheridan, Colorado. Sheridan is a small community within metropolitan
Denver, situated at the southern edge of the City of Denver. The basin
is bounded on the north and west by the Clear Creek watershed, and on
the south and east by the watershed of the North Fork of the South Platte
River. The basin is roughly leaf-shaped with a length of approximately
45 miles and a maximum width of 13 miles. The 262 square-mile drainage
area of the basin includes portions of Clear Creek, Park, Jefferson,
Denver and Arapahoe Counties, all in Colorado.

5. TOPOGRAPHY, GEOLOGY AND SOILS

Approximately 90 percent of the watershed is mountainous and char-
acterized by steep, narrow valleys. Elevations in the mountainous portion
range from 14,260 feet mean sea level at the source to 5,740 feet mean
sea level near Morrison where the stream leaves the mountains.
