Authority. --This interim report is in partial response to the <br />following resolution adopted 14 June 1956: <br /> <br />I <br />l <br />! <br />, <br /> <br />" <br /> <br />Resolved by the Committee on Public Works of the United <br />States Senate. That the Board of Engineers for Rivers and <br />Harbors. created under Section 3 of the River and Harbor Act. <br />approved June 13, 1902, be. and is hereby. requested to <br />review the reports of the Chief of Engineers on the South <br />Platte River and tributaries, Colorado. Wyoming, and <br />Nebraska. published as House Document Numbered 669. <br />Eightieth Congress, Second Session. and other reports, with <br />a view to determining whether any modification of the <br />existing project is advisable at this time, with particular <br />reference to the construction of flood control and related <br />improvements in the vicinity of and upstream from the <br />City of Denver. Colorado. <br /> <br />I, <br />I <br /> <br />~ <br /> <br />A final report in response to the resolution will be submitted at a <br />later date. <br /> <br />2. Basin description. --Bear Creek is a left-bank tributary of <br />the South Platte River near Sheridan, Colorado. a community situated <br />adjacent to the city of Denver. The basin drains 262 square miles, <br />of which about 90 percent is mountainous terrain of the Rocky <br />Mountain range. The basin is roughly leaf-shaped with a length <br />of approximately 45 miles and a maximum width of 13 miles. Elevations <br />in the mountainous portion range from 14,260 feet above mean sea <br /> <br />21 <br />
