'.

'I

"',

,

of

sustain a trout fishery. However, it undoubtedly could be developed
and lIIIInaged as a warm-water fishery capable of supporting 5,500 fisher-
I118n days-use annually, e'l81uated at $8,250.

Fishennan-use at the level stated above, however, is predicated on
development and managemeJ1t of these bodies of water primarily for
fishing. If high-speed boating and water skiing were permitted, for
emmple, the potential use by fishermen would be substantially curtailed.

With re~rd to public hunting, you will recall tbat our report of
November 9, 1966, pointed out the rapid encroacbment of urban and indus-
trial development in the project vicinity. We :fUrther stated that in
view of this encroacbmen-t and -the great demand for water-based general
recreation facilities, public hunting in this small project area would
not be compatible with these other land uses wi thin a very few years.

However, if the Soda Lakes and approx1mtely 660 surrounding acres could
be acquired as part of the Mount Carbon Reservoir project, the needs of
general recreationists could be met, aDd there would still be enough
publicly-owned land to pl'Qvide for a 600-800 acre Wildlife Management
Area. Controlled hunting for cottontail rabbits, mourning doves, ring-
necked pheasants, and waterfowl could be :f'urn1shed. Such an area would
support 500 hunter-days use annually, evaluated at $1,000. We wish to
point out, however, that the intensive development proposed for general
recreation at this project in the draft report prepared by the Bureau
of Outdoor Recreation my preclUde even these l1lll1ted hunting oppor-
, tuni ties.
".
"- ,
We hope this inforDlltion will aid you in arriving at a decision in the
I118tter of recollllllending the acquisition of the Soda Lakes and adjacent
lands as a part of your Mount Carbon Reservoir project.

Sincerely yours,

/s/ R.
