~

0'
".....
,::;1

c-,
'.'

of construction of each stage of the proje~t. This control system will
provide positive identification of fluctuations of the water table and
the confined water in and surrounding the project area.

CI

..

Generally, observation wells for measuring ground water in both the
unconfined and confined aquifers will be installed at minimum intervals
of 3 miles along the boundary of the project area. Additionally, shallower
observation wells for measuring the water table will be installed between
the deeper, dual-completion observation wells. The extra observation
wells required to augment those presently in service for this purpose
are estimated to be: ~
":,f

.

.

Stage Number of wells
1-2 22
3 15
4 15
5 10

.

.

As the water table of the unconfined aquifer and the artesian pressure
of the confined aquifer are monitored by observation wells, adjustments
to production ,well pumping rates can be made so as to not adversely
affect the hydrologic balance of ground waters within and outside of the
project area. Records of these ground water measurements will be available
to any public or interested persons, and the operation of the project is
flexible; that is, pumping from any well or group of wells will b€
adjusted as warranted.

.

.

..

(3) Pumps--Each well will be equipped with a weatherproof,
electrically driven, deep well turbine pump. The pump starters will be
equipped with a time-delay automatic switch to allow the wells to restart
in the event of a power outage. Automatic shutoff switches will be
installed to turn off the pumps if well flows should cease. Flow rate
meters will also be provided. Ground water in the project stages varies
in quality. Pumped waters will be blended to yield water that will meet
the quality of water terms of the Rio Grande Compact (see section B-5).

.

.

(4) Laterals--Well field laterals (all buried pipelines)
will collect and deliver the pumped ground water to the open conveyance
channel. Usually, small laterals will collect the discharges of several
wells and deliver the combined flows to the conveyance channel. These
laterals will total about 100 miles in length and range in capacity from
0.6 ft3/s to 10 ft3/s, depending on the number of wells on each lateral
and their combined yield. The designs of the laterals are based on
capacities equal to 110 percent of the normal discharges of the wells
tributary to the laterals. The laterals will discharge into the con-
veyance channel through concrete transition structures.

..

ng

A-9
