.

StudY #B. Non-native fish manaqement.

DescriDtion of work
A new-start study (RIP new emphasis: Management of Nonnative Fishes)
by UDWR and lFL. Objectives of the study are:

1. to identify and assess factors that limit the distribution and
abundance of all nonsa1monid, nonnative fishes by taking a
life-history and zoogeographical perspective;

2. to evaluate the potential impact of northern pike on YOY
Colorado squawfish in Utah; and

3. to identify and evaluate potential methods for selectively
controlling impacts of nonnative fishes on endangered fishes.

Methods
Researchers from LFL wi 11 review exi st ing 1 iterature regardi ng
factors that limit the distribution and abundance of nonnative
fishes in their native ranges. Data sources would include existing
literature, endangered fishes data bases, and laboratory and museum
collections. UDWR researchers will investigate potential impacts of
northern pike on YOY Colorado squawfish in the Green River, Utah.
Bioenergetics models will be used to estimate the prey base
necessary to support northern pike populations and investigate
potential impacts of northern pike populations on Colorado squawfish
recruitment to adult stages. UDWR will also identify and evaluate
potential methods for selectively controlling nonnative fishes,
including flow manipulation and removal.

Rationale
Results from this study could potentially be used to refine flow
recommendations for every season by identifying.possible flows that
would negatively impact undesirable nonnative fishes.

De1iverab1es
UDWR and LFL wi 11 submi t a sunmary report deta 11 i ng potent ia 1
nonnative fish management strategies that could be evaluated by the
end of the fiscal year. UOWR will submit an annual report
detailing northern pike studies and management reconmendations and
an annual report on evaluation of potential methods to control or
remove important nonnative fishes

1993 Budqet

- Labor
- Travel
- Report
- Total

$48,000
4,500
1,500
$54,000

$54.000

- Grand Total

Flaming Gorge Studies

27
