A full <br />ice cover has formed over the portion of Tomich; Creek.. which <br />will prelJent tne ice jam from progressing up Tomich; Creek when <br />the head of the jam on the Gunnison River reaches this point. <br /> <br />Once suCh an ice cover forms, ice is not li(ely to build up on the underside <br />of the cover because the ice and snow insulate the water from extremely cold <br />air temperatures. After an ice cover has formed. there is no ice jafTl'lling <br />action. except possibly in the spring. when the cover starts to melt and <br />floating sections of the former cover collect in one location. That action <br />is usually temporal in nature and, in this reach of Gunnison, rarely causes <br />flooding. <br /> <br />-5- <br />
