0011,6U

Photograph B

Confluence of the Tomich; Creek (on the right) with the Gunnison
River (on the left) looking upstream early in the season. A full
ice cover has formed over the portion of Tomich; Creek.. which
will prelJent tne ice jam from progressing up Tomich; Creek when
the head of the jam on the Gunnison River reaches this point.

Once suCh an ice cover forms, ice is not li(ely to build up on the underside
of the cover because the ice and snow insulate the water from extremely cold
air temperatures. After an ice cover has formed. there is no ice jafTl'lling
action. except possibly in the spring. when the cover starts to melt and
floating sections of the former cover collect in one location. That action
is usually temporal in nature and, in this reach of Gunnison, rarely causes
flooding.

-5-
