0.1
1:.0
"".1

.

~;,~.;\
"'.sw

10. Site #4 Alternative

f~1.
-ihi

This alternative features a concrete arch Saltado Dam located

on the San Mi~uel River 7.8 miles downstreaIDof the junction of

Highways 145 and 62. Behind the dam, Saltado Reservoir would back water

up the river 3.5 miles, and would cover 350 acres. Highway 145 would

have to be relocated for a 4.7 mile length due to inundation of the

present roadway.

From the dam, a pipeline would carry water 5.9 miles to a

pumping plant which would be located in the proximity of the "s"

curve of the Norwood Hill highway. The pumping plant would lift the

water 510 feet to Basin Canal, which would convey the water across

Wright's Mesa, Naturita Canyon, and several other drainages, before

ending in the Dry Creek Basin. The current irrigation system would

be lllcorporated into the project, and would continue to serve the

~:;;:-~

area. Gurley Ditch would be rehabilitated, mainly by lining it to

reduce seepage losses.

The Site #4 Alternative would provide an annual supply of irrigation

water for 12,700 acres of supplemental ~nd 7,060 acres of full service

land. Buried pipe laterals would be used to distribute the water to

sprinkler systems. Twelve thousand acre-feet of industrial water

would be allocated annually to the proposed generating plant to be

built by the Colorado-Ute Electric Associatio~. Two thousand acre-

feet of municipal water Would be allocated for domestic use on

Wright's Mesa.

(A gravity concrete dam was also priced at this site with a cost

of twice that of the concrete arch dam above.)

,

_ 10
