Background <br /> <br />On October 2, 196~Congress passed the Wild and Scenic Rivers <br />I <br />Act for the purpose of protecting America's remaining free <br /> <br />flowing rivers, or portions thereof, for the enjoyment of <br />present and future generations. Congress provided this <br />protection tilrough the establishment of a national wild and <br /> <br />scenic rivers system. The Act, in its original form, <br /> <br />designated eight rivers as initial components of the National <br /> <br />Wild and Scenic Rivers System, established a procedure for <br /> <br />adding additional rivers to the National System~and directed <br />L'J" . <br /> <br />that 27 other rivers be studied. <br /> <br />Since 196B the Act has been amended several times adding new <br />rivers to the National System and designating addit{onal <br />rivers for study.
