Bill Armstrong (R-Colo.) <br /> <br />today unveiled legislation to give special federal protection to <br /> <br />594,175 acres of Colorado public lands and to resolve the <br /> <br />long-standing dispute over wilderness water rights. <br /> <br />"This legislation, written with the input of thousands of <br /> <br />Coloradans, would create new wilderness areas, break the wilderness <br /> <br />water deadlock, and establish the special designation of National <br /> <br />Recreation Area for lands which do not qualify as wilderness but <br /> <br />which have exceptional natural beauty and recreation value." <br /> <br />Surrounded by maps depicting his own and other proposed <br /> <br />wilderness boundaries at a meeting of Western Colorado leaders, <br /> <br />Armstrong reiterated his pledge to press for action on the bill~ <br /> <br />"A new wilderness bill for Colorado is one of my top three <br /> <br />priorities for my final year in the Senate." He said he will <br /> <br />introduce the Colorado Natural Heritage Preservation Act of 1990 <br /> <br />when the next session of Congress convenes Jan. 23. <br /> <br />The Armstrong bill would designate 471,875 acres as federal <br /> <br />wilderness. If enacted, it would bring the total wilderness area in <br /> <br />Colorado close to 3.1 million acres, Armstrong said, "which is <br /> <br />-MORE- <br />
