Public access to the WSA boundary in the Red Canyon area would be identified <br />for acquisition. <br /> <br />Agriculture Development. No agricultural or related development would be permitted <br />within the management unit. The BlM would recommend revocation of the portion of the <br />BOR Fruitland Mesa withdrawal that is within the WSA, <br /> <br />Fire Management. A total of 21,038 acres would be managed under the fire-use <br />category where fire would be utilized as a management tool. Only natural ignitions <br />meeting pre-determined prescriptions would be allowed in this area. <br /> <br />Lands Adjacent to WSA but within GGSRMA (Unit 4) <br /> <br />40,792 acres of public surface; 8 percent of the planning area. <br /> <br />Management Unit 4 consists of the 40,792 acres of publiC lands surrounding the Gunnison <br />Gorge. <br /> <br />Maps, interpretive materials, and facilities will be developed. Recreation use will be <br />monitored and possibly restricted as necessary to protect natural features and recreation <br />opportunities. <br /> <br />lands in the Peach Valley area (15,610 acres) will be managed for ORV recreation <br />opportunities. A minimum of restrictions would be placed on surface-disturbing activities <br />and a high concentration of recreation users will be permitted within this area. Motorized <br />access to the remainder of the management unit (25,182 acres) will be limited to <br />designated roads and trails, the majority of which are primitive in character. This area <br />will be managed to maintain a predominantly natural environment with low but evident <br />human concentrations and impacts, <br /> <br />Oil and Gas. Federal oil and gas estate will be open to leasing. A seasonal stipulation <br />on seismic and drilling activities will be in effect from December 1 through April 30, on <br />crucial deer and elk winter range (8,077 acres of Federal surface and 280 acres of split- <br />estate). Variances in this seasonal restriction may be granted. <br /> <br />Locatable Minerals. Federal mineral estate will be open to entry and location. The BlM <br />protective withdrawal (Pl 5261; September 15, 1972) will be revoked and the BOR <br />withdrawal on Fruitland Mesa will be recommended for revocation. Revoking these <br />mineral withdrawals will allow for mineral exploration and development, facilitate resource <br />management, and permit long-term land use planning. <br /> <br />Mineral Materials. Federal mineral estates will be open to disposal of mineral materials. <br /> <br />Soils and Water Resources. The Elephant Skin Wash salinity control project will be <br />maintained to reduce saline runoff. Elephant Skin Wash will be protected from surface- <br /> <br />31 <br />
