<br />even this small oasis suffered seriously from lack of water, much
<br />accentuated by increasing upstream diversions. These encroach-
<br />ments on the pueblo's ancient water right, as granted by the King
<br />of Spain, and on which the very existence of the settlement de-
<br />pended, became the subject of long drawn out litigation, with the
<br />water finally restored to the town.
<br />Practically all surface flows available to the coastal plain are re-
<br />ceived from the watersheds of the Santa Ana, San Gabriel, and
<br />Los Angeles rivers. The areas tributarr to each of these streams
<br />and the run-offs for different rainfall years are given in Table 2.
<br />From this table it will be noted that the mean annual run-off from
