<br />- - --"'-=- <br /> <br />l/;J~j <br />\' ':i~~ <br /> <br />'f'~ <br />\~>.?~" <br />-)0 ,~.;;: <br /> <br />While signing the EIS Record of Decision at a public ceremony in Phoenix last October 9th, <br />Secretary of the Interior Bruce Babbitt said, "In signing this document, we begin a new chapter in the <br />fabled history of the Grand Canyon and Glen Canyon. We have now provided protection to the <br />Colorado River by setting revised Glen Canyon Dam operations." <br /> <br />The AMWG became a reality on January 17, 1997, when Secretary Babbitt signed the Charter <br />creating the group under the auspices of the Federal Advisory Committee Act. The AMWG will <br />specifically define monitoring and research information needs important to developing recommendations <br />to the Secretary, <br /> <br />The AMWG will meet September 10 - II, 1997, at the Ramada Suites Hotel, 1635 North <br />Scottsdale Road, in Phoenix, The Wednesday meeting will run from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m" while the <br />Thursday meeting will run from 8:00 a.m. to noon. <br /> <br />The Federal Advisory Committee Act sers specific procedures and processes for such <br />committees, As part of that process, individuals wishing to make formal comments at the meeting must <br />provide written notice to the Bureau of Reclamation in Salt Lake City by 10:00 am mountain daylight <br />time (9:00 am in Arizona and for those on Pacific daylight time) Friday, September 5, 1997. Such notice <br />may be mailed to Steven Lloyd, Bureau of Reclamation, Upper Colorado Regional Office, 125 South <br />State Street, Room 6107, Salt Lake City, Utah 84138-1102. They may be e-mailed to <br />slloyd@uc.usbr.gov. In addition, notice may be faxed to (801) 524-5499. Public statements should not <br />be repetitive of previously submitted oralor written statements and are limited to 10 minutes each. <br />Written comments may be submitted to the same addresses, and will be accepted up to the time of the <br />meeting. Mr Lloyd may be reached by phone at (801) 524-3690, <br /> <br />The AMWG agenda includes organization and orientation discussions as they begin their work. <br />There will be discussions concerning the formation of a Technical Work Group and an Annual Report to <br />Congress on the process. The possible modification of Glen Canyon Dam by the addition of a <br />temperature control device on the powerplant penstocks will be discussed (as provided in the Glen <br />Canyon Dam EIS.) The Committee will also discuss endangered species, cultural resources, long-term <br />monitoring and research, annual operating plans, and will receive public comments near the end of the <br />second day. <br /> <br />-BOR- <br /> <br />Editors Note: A listing of members of the AMWG appointed by the Secretary of the Interior is <br />attached to this news release, They include: a representative of each of the 12 Cooperating <br />Agencies who worked on the formation of the EIS and representatives from environmental groups, <br />recreation interests, and contractors who purchase federal power from Glen Canyon Dam <br />Powerplant. The Secretary's Designated Federal Official chairs <br />the AMWG. The members have been appointed to four-year terms. <br />
