In this evaluation all open canals and laterals would
be replaced with pressurized pipelines for sprinkler irrigation under a joint
agency project. Reclamation would have responsibility for design and
construction of the main off-farm conveyance system while the SCS would work
with local farmers to develop the on-farm sprinkler irrigation improvements.
Based on an estimated cost of $70 per ton of salt removed, the work group
recommended that both agencies continue to pursue a combined agency plan for
the entire project area. Since the system layouts for the Ferron and
Cottonwood areas consisted entirely of buried pipelines, it was assumed that
the distribution system would also be used to deliver winter stockwater and
thus eliminate seepage due to winter operation of canals.

As sprinkler system layouts for the various canal systems were prepared after

the 1986 evaluation, it soon became apparent that it would be too costly to

construct totally enclosed distribution systems with buried pipelines because

of the large distance between the points of diversion and the irrigated lands.

Consequently, system layouts were developed which used the existing open

canals for the main water conveyance facility with pressurized pipeline

laterals which would deliver the water to the farms for sprinkler irrigation.

A typical system layout and its associated costs are included in Appendix A.

Figure IV-l is a map of the project area.

IV-l

n . , .~ 6 f ·
VJL i'i
