4451

.

According to Dr. Behnke (letter of April 6, 1973), the North'
Cunningham Creek population is one of two known populations
in Colorado and is believed to be essentially a pure strain
of the indigenous trout of the Upper Colorado River Basin.

Recent correspondence from. the Colorado Division of Wildlife
indicates several potential impacts on the population of
Colorado River cutthroat trout.. Possible impacts include:
potential for hybridization with other species, reduction
of natural reproduction, excessive or prolonged turbidity
and its effects on food organisms and spawn survival, and
overexploitation by fishermen due to increased accessibility.

4. Cumulative Impacts of the Components

(1) ~ugar Loaf Dam and Turquoise Lake is an enlargement of
an existing water storage facility formerly owned by the
CF&I Steel Corporation. Enlargement of the reservoir inun-
dated an additional 986 acres of land along 3.5 miles of
Lake Fork Channel. The enlarged reservoir has a conservation
pool about 5 miles long with 11 miles of shoreline and a
total surface acreage of 1,788 acres.

(2) Of the 5,030 total acres of land acquired for the
Turquoise Lake enlargement, 2,808 acres were acquired from
32 private owners by the Bureau of Reclamation. The balance
of land was withdrawn from other Federal agencies. The
purchase of private land for Project purposes represents a
decrease in county tax revenue for Lak~ County.

IV-61

.
